Hold that thought!
What would you do if you were attacked by a Crocodile inside water?
If in land, you may pull off some tricks, but in water wrestling with the beast will lead to complete failure. It will hack you to death. The best you can do is to kill it.
But can you kill it?
May or maybe not, but you can definitely drown it. The throat of the Crocodile is sealed by a muscle which prevents water from entering its body even when it opens its mouth inside water. So, what you have to do is to take your hand too far into the danger zone into its throat and break free the muscle yourself. Water will start entering its body and for Christ’s sake it may decide to leave you alone. And also in the process may take that arm away with it, during the process of shutting its mouth. (Opportunity cost)
Leave the crocodile, leave the Water and let’s get inside our Head.
One of the Organs in the Human Body that has highly got my vote over the years is the Human Brain. Apart from being the most erotic part (my favourite), its behaviour is very much outstanding, that makes me just sit in awe. There are a lot of parallel Processing and decision making going inside, which when done very consciously will result in a terrible headache for the thinker.
And the best one for me is when a Brain can decide to fool itself.
Yes, it can easily fool itself.
The RAS, also known as the Reticular Activating System is responsible for this. The crocodile will inflict terrible wounds on you before you decide to act on the situation. But the pain from the wounds inflicted in you will be masked while you are in the high tension situation fighting the crocodile. In fact, it is very essential that the pain be masked so that you can attend to that situation to save your life than be a cry-baby, even if one of your arms might be broken and dangling.
When I was travelling for a Physics Exam (back on those geeky school days), I fell down a Bus, made three somersaults and got up with a lot of wounds. I walked a mile with those wounds, wrote the exam (a 95%), and got the return bus to my house. And it was then that I started experiencing the Pain all together.
The RAS can prioritize on events that are happening to you. It however is sometimes destructive as it works against what we need to do at times.
President Theodore Roosevelt was shot during a Campaign. The Bullet pierced through his Speech text (a 50 page thick handout), and his steel Eyeglass Case. It did not penetrate enough to get into his lungs though. He gave a 90 minute speech with that wound. His RAS, decided that the Speech was important than the pain he was having at that time. Rather, he had a passion which made the RAS decide this course of action very consciously. Man, I adore Him for what he has done.
If you want something very badly, you will get it. Your Brain will work with you, IF you want to. Period. This is how the Human Brain is built in taking decisions. History repeats itself that’s for sure, what is not sure is whether people really want the things they dare dream of.
